Festive Sewing

Pattern Review - DIY Apron

Hello and Happy Holidays!

I am glad to say that I actually managed to squeeze in some un-selfish sewing this Christmas.

Although not the most challenging project I popped out an apron as a gift for one of my mum's close friends. My mum had been procrastinating about making this for her friend for a while and had not gotten round to it. It was the 22nd December and I was scolding my mum for not whipping up this simple gift. In the end to show her how easy and quick this was I said that I would sew it for her.

Believe it or not, during by 10 years of sewing I have not sewed a single apron until now!!! I don't know what I was waiting for as this was so easy and a great piece of instant gratification.

If you have been following my blog at all or know me in the real world, you will know that I really don't enjoy sewing for other people. Mainly because I like sewing for myself as it is stress/pressure free and because it takes a while to get to know your measurements, style and fit.

However, this person is the exception that makes the rule (even if the exception is only an apron!) as I have known her all my life and she always gives my mum and myself lovely and thoughtful homemade gifts. Check out the shrug on the dress that I wore to my uncle's wedding here. This was hand knitted as a present by her years ago and is still one of my wardrobe staples.

For this apron I used a template that my mum had free from her Prima Magazine. I pretty much followed the template exactly. The only changes that I made were to create ties from the fabric (the pattern suggested using twill tape) and I self-lined it and used a piece of bias binding on the bottom and finished it off with a hand sewed invisible hem.

The fabric is from my mum's stash so I am not really sure what it is, but I think it is a lovely piece of English cotton. Here is a (creased) close up of the pattern on the fabric.

Here is a picture of me wearing it so you can get an idea of the proportions. As I am at my folks I couldn't pop it on my dummy. Can you tell that I like floral fabric?? I am such a sucker for it. Originally my mum pulled out some other fabric that would have really suited an apron, but I liked the weight and pattern of this fabric more.

Anyway, I shouldn't tell my mum off for procrastinating as I should really be finishing my dress for my birthday celebrations/December garment. I am heading off to France at the end of the week, so I need to finish it before I leave Bristol. I am avoiding doing it as I need to hem it (boring!) and I am going to attempt a handpicked invisible zipper for the first time and the thought of it is scaring me a little. Luckily, the zipper is in the side so if it turns out badly hopefully it will be covered most of the time.

How did your festive sewing go and did you sew or receive any handmade Christmas gifts this year?

Happy Sewing!
