Autumn Florals

Pattern Review: Vogue 8725

I am glad that my sewing mojo is back in full swing. It was my uncle's wedding this weekend and I decided to make Vogue 8725. This is how I styled it for the day.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this dress! It makes me feel so lovely and feminine, and I really think that it plays my silhouette to its advantage. Plus, despite there being no cleavage on show it make my bust look huge which is great because:-

1. Boobs are awesome
2. It helps balance out my ample hips

Most of the dresses I make tend to skim over and flare out at the hips, however, since I had been feeling inspired I decided to try something a bit different. I wanted to get the the fit right (and I knew instantly that this baby would require some size grading) so I made a muslin.

The fit was actually pretty easy as this is a pattern that comes with A,B,C & D cup sizes. This made everything super easy as no FBA was required. I cut a size 14 out on the bodice and graded out to a size 16 on the hips. I ended up taking 1.5" in on either side of the bodice, so next time I make this I could probably go down a size on top.

The fabric is an old season Liberty cotton that I picked up for £6 per metre from Goldhawk Road, purchased during a fabric shop with my sewing group. I am easily seduced by florals and it was a dream to sew with. I would happily go back for other Liberty prints to have in my stash. It's not clear due to my trippy photos, but the backing colour is actually a dark chocolate brown. I really liked this autumnal touch.

I adore the split in the back which makes this dress practical, I felt so comfortable in it all day Saturday. The back (and front) are strapless bra friendly too.

I lined the dress with some green lining, also picked up from Goldhawk Road for a ridiculous £1 per metre. I finished the hem with bias binding. Another construction change that you can see in the picture below was that I sewed the back seams together after I had attached the lining. This allowed me to really double check the fit and take the odd 1/4" off here and there, and peg the skirt a tad more. As a result, I decided to finish the back seam with bias binding for a neater finish.

All in all I am really happy with this dress. It came together very easily - yes folks this really is a Very Easy Vogue pattern! - and I am definitely going to make this again. As you can see below, just wearing it puts a smile on my face.

This was a fun autumn project, and has definitely got me in the mood for winter sewing. I have recently purchased a bunch of ponte knit fabrics, one of which is contributing to my jacket sew-a-long with my sewing group.
