Fabric Porn Boston Style

I was recently in Boston for a work trip. This is the second time that I have visited Boston this year and I did some fabric shopping research beforehand. To be honest I hadn't really heard that much about Boston. I knew that there was a Joann's, but this was quite a way out of the city. In total I visited 4 shops. 

The first and my favourite was Winmil Fabrics located downtown. I particularly loved their ITY knit selection, especially as these are harder to come across in the UK. And at $4.98 per yard they were a huge bargain.  





I also picked up this pre-underlined lace for $6.98 per yard 


 And this cotton print for $3.98 per yard.



Next, I popped into Van's Fabrics, round the corner from Winmil in Chinatown. This shop specialises in Asian style fabrics. They have lovely silks and brocades. I only purchased one item which is some kind of viscose/rayon fabric for $5 per yard. 


There are two fabrics located in the Cambridge area of Boston. Sewlow Discount Fabrics has a bit of pretty much everything. Some really fun novelty fabrics as well as knits, furnishing fabrics, linens etc. I picked up some knit fabrics for $3.99 per metre. I also purchased the same fabric but in solid black. Not really worth posting a photo. 



Lastly I headed a few blocks down to Sewfisticated Fabrics. They had many novelty fabrics, african wax prints, jerseys and calico prints. I didn't love the quality of many of these fabrics for dressmaking, but they would be great for crafting or costumes. I snapped up this Halloween remnant for MJ.


I can't wait to start sewing up some garments with these new purchases. After feeling as though I have been making headway with my fabric stash I have done a u-turn and it is now well and truly out of control. I had been sewing here and there before I went to Boston and I do have some garments to blog about, I will just have to find some time and nice weather to get some decent photos.

    Very nice cuts you got there! ITY is one of my faves. Such vibrant prints and colors and nice drape!

      Me too. I love ITY knits, we just don't get the same variety here in the UK.

Pattern Review: Butterick 4443 Happy Easter! After spending Saturday in sunny Brighton, today in London is a such a contrast. Grey and miserable, but the perfect excuse to curl up in bed with a coffee and catch up on sewing blogs. So here is my April garment of the month - another version of Butterick 4443 . July Garment of the Month

Pattern Review: Simplicity 1872 My mum had a retirement party this weekend and of course I had to make a dress to celebrate. I had been wanting to try out the dress from Simplicity 1872 for years and finally decided to take the plunge. I have made this pattern as a peplum top  before, but it was so old that it went to the charity shop earlier this year, so it's nice to have another iteration of the pattern in my wardrobe. Ok,so let's talk fabric. I picked this up at the textile district around the Sacre Couer on my holiday to Paris with my mum last September. It cost €10 for 3 metres which is a bargain. I am pretty sure that it is some kind of polyester chiffon. I underlined the dress with stretch lining from Simply Fabrics in Brixton priced at £1 per metre.  I know that a couple of people have mentioned that there is a huge amount of ease in this pattern. Scrap-Busting - Part 2

Pattern Review: McCall's 3341 Firstly, some breaking news which is that I am currently featured on Pattern Review as their Member in Focus. You can check out my interview here. As promised, here is my second stash busting mini. For this skirt I used McCall's 3341  and went with View E. I have made this before in my pre-blogging days, also to use up a remnant of leftover fabric. This is a simple a-line skirt with darts in the front and back and is a pattern that I stole from my Mum's stash years ago. I cut a size 16 and sewed this straight out of the envelope. The only (lazy) change I made was to omit the waist band. I am trying to demonstrate with my above pose how the skirt is designed to sit just above your natural waist. I always find this quite strange in patterns, as so few RTW clothes have this feature.
